31 Aug, 2022
Now in her second year as Board of Trustees Chairwoman, Molly Sicuro is enjoying a mix of excitement about the school’s future and the bittersweet reality that her two children Olivia (12th)and Sam (8th) will be graduating this year. Take a minute to get to know Molly a little better and why she thinks SAA-SDS is a great place to be!
How long have you been a part of the Memphis Community?
I grew up in Tupelo, MS. After graduating from Ole Miss, I moved to Memphis thinking I would only be here a year or two. 24 years later I am still here! Memphis is home, and SAA-SDS is a big part of that.
Why did you choose St. Agnes and St. Dominic for your children?
We knew we wanted our children to go to a Catholic school. Since we were members at St. Peter, we visited St. Agnes – St. Dominic first and never looked anywhere else! Everyone was so welcoming, and we loved that our son and daughter could be on the same campus but enjoy the benefits of a single-gender education. We knew from the beginning that this would be the best place for our family.
What is your favorite thing about the school?
I have a lot of favorite things about our school, but after being here for 15 years I have to say our sense of community stands out and really sets us apart. Both of my children will graduate in the spring and move on to new places next fall. We will all miss being on campus, but I have no doubt that we will take all our SAA-SDS friends and family with us.
What volunteer activities have you been involved in at SAA-SDS?
Over the years I have volunteered for everything from the ECC Fall Fest to Annual Fund Call-A-Thon. There are so many ways to get involved!
Why did you decide to volunteer at the school?
When Olivia started PK, we did not know any of the families in her class. Volunteering was a great way to become friends with other parents and teachers at the school. Being involved in these events and getting to know so many people only confirmed that SAA-SDS is a special place.
Can you briefly describe the role of the board?
The role of the Board is to set the strategic direction of the school while staying true to our Dominican Identity. The Board’s goal is to ensure the long-term sustainability of our school for the next 170 years so that it may continue to provide an outstanding educational experience for students in the Memphis community.
Looking ahead, what are you excited about in the school's future?
It is hard not to be excited about the construction projects starting on campus. A great deal of thought and planning have gone into designing the best facilities to lead us into the future. I cannot wait to see the students in the new labs and go to a basketball game in the new gym!
What advice would you give a new parent to our community?
Find a way to stay connected to the school, either through volunteering, coaching, or attending events like the Gala. Take advantage of different opportunities to be involved and engaged. Cherish the time your children have on this campus!
