Reflections on Remote Learning from the St. Dominic Counselor

During this transition to remote learning, we've asked teachers, students and administrators to  share their thoughts on the experience.  Below is a reflection from St. Dominic School Counselor Rosa Tutor. 

Looking over my time as a school counselor, I never imagined myself participating in remote learning or telecounseling. The idea of meeting with families and boys through video chat and email seemed challenging.  I asked myself “how can we remain connected and keep our SDS community as tight knit without being in the same physical space?”

From day one of remote learning, my questions were easily answered. Our incredible teachers and staff came into remote learning with a positive attitude and growth mindset to ensure this new experience of learning would be successful. Our parents and families have been an inspiration in their willingness to go above and beyond to be partners with their son’s teachers. 

I believe our connectedness and community has become closer than ever as we experience this journey of remote learning together. I continue to meet with my boys via Zoom for counseling sessions and help them manage their fears and worries, I am able to join in morning meetings and lunch groups, and I am able to continue to connect with our parents and families. 

The SDS community has not skipped a beat. If anything, I have been able to learn so many new things about the boys - I even got to celebrate one of our boy’s dog’s birthday! I am continuing to meet pets and beloved stuffed animals. 

Through remote learning, as a counselor I am able to connect and learn about the boys on a much deeper level. My fears and questions around remote learning and remote counseling were put to rest by the incredible work of our teachers, staff, and SDS families. I am so proud to say I am a part of this journey with the St. Agnes Academy-St Dominic school community!
